WalletPoll: Would you buy your wedding dress on eBay?
Filed under: Bargains, Savvy Shopper, WalletPoll, Fashion, Freebies and Bargains
Now, call me a wedding freak, but looking at wedding dresses online is a fun way to spend an hour while you're meant to be working. (No, none of my friends are getting married any time soon, I don't even have that excuse). But I was a little shocked when i found them going for as little as £100 on eBay. That dress pictured is just £9.95 at the moment. Blimey. Let's be honest here, it's quite pretty. Not a meringue in sight, and a great nipped in waist.
Would you buy it?Now, these dresses aren't second-hand (there's something very 'bad omen-ish' about that, isn't there?), they're brand new and being shipped from China for next to nothing. And you know what, some of them aren't that bad. Yeah, a bit garish in places, but you could get that toned down. They've got measurements sorted, so if you know them you shouldn't have a problem. You can always get them tailored if the dress isn't quite perfect.
But...
There's just something... a bit flat about it. No fittings, no excitement. The postman knocks on the door one day and you think "ooh, that's the wedding dress. And there's the gas bill." But, considering the dress can be the most expensive part of a wedding, and you're only going to wear it once, maybe it's something to consider.
What do you think? Would you buy your wedding dress off eBay?

hi,
i did buy my dress from ebay, all the way from china. and when the postman knocked at my door i was so full of excitement.
and trying it on for the first time i was amazed.
it fit like a dream, the detail of the intricate stitching was fantastic... what can i say?
the dress would have cost around £2000 made to measure from a wedding boutique here in the uk - i got mine for £83 plus £25 postage.
i only had to wait two weeks from ordering to it arriving, and wow - it truly was an awe inspiring dress when it came!

hey, i too bought my dress and my 7, yes 7, bridesmaid dresses from ebay and it they were very beautiful and fitted perfectly. for my dress, veil, and tiara i was £96 inc postage and the detail of fine stiching was fabulous. my 7 bridesmaids dresses wre also very detailed and including postage cost £28 each! all in very fine silks and perfectly made. i have 2 toddeller daughters so trailing around shops to try on dresses was not really an option for me that and trying to organise 7 women whom i have to say all ranged in shapes and sizes was difficut. my smallest a uk size 6 my biggest a uk size 22, most high streets do not stock a full range of dresses accross all the sizes so having them measured and have the dresses made to fit was ideal.
everyone was flabergasted at the wedding when they found out the dresses were imported from ebay and cheap!!
if you ask me its just another instance of "rip-off" britain. my dress in a wedding store would cost in the region of £2500-£3000, and the BMd's £800-£1000 each ( im quite pleased to have gotten them all for less than that total) because they were actually intended as wedding dresses. my dad was also over the moon he had very kindly offered to pay for the dresses and accessories and had saved a fair bit of money assuming it would cost a small fortune, when the bill came to just over £300 he was astonished ad delighted. i personally think ( and i may point out my husband and i are not relgious in the slightest) that people spend too much of everything, money, thought, effort on the wedding and assume that as long as this is the perfection you always imagined then so will your marriage and this is not the case. we wanted to get married, we already had spent 10years as couple with 2 small daughters and although we ended up with a big wedding (souly due to the number of other family members there are my mother is 1 of 10 my father 1 of 6) we managed to budget everything and everyone still had a fab day which was relaxed and very much family orientated. with 105 day guests and another 40 or so evening guests our whole wedding bill was about £6,500, the largest of that being the caterer at nearly £4000. i did all of my own favours and flowers which i loved, we got a student photographer for 1/3 of the price of a stuidio or proffesional and for everything else we shopped around, cars, coaches, a piper etc
it was the most fun iv ever had no stres no hastle just everything as it turned out :)
also i bought all the girls tiaras from ebay for ".50 each inc postage they too were very beautiful!
so if you plannng to get married ebays certainly worth a look, yes the language barrier can be difficult with some of the chinese shops but the are very willing to be helpful and most of them have a good returns policy if your dress arrives and is no use.

I bought my wedding dress on e-bay also, it was exciting. The dress came to me absolutely stunning and fitted like a glove. I would recommend buying on e-bay for sure. My dress in total of postage cost £100 and a would not change it for the world. The many comments i got on my wedding day on how the bodice was stitched and the delicate detail in it, i felt like a million dollars and that my dress was worth that too.

we only gave ourselves 3 weeks to get wedding organised, so i purchased my FIRST wedding dress off ebay exactly 3 weeks before my wedding date.
im a larger person so finding bigger sizes pre-made at short notice that didnt look like tents was a nightmare (im not a dress person so i was pretty worried as it was). and i didnt have the budget to blow on a dress either.
so i bought a red chiffon dress for 99.00, they told me it takes them 3 - 4 days to arrange the dress to be dispatched so given that, i thought would have it in good time to maybe find a dressmaker who could make any alterations.
it never arrived (it was coming from a bridal shop in london, i live in glasgow). they told me it got lost so they refunded me.
then i found myself without a dress the week before my wedding.
so i bit the bullet and bought ANOTHER dress on ebay. for 130.00. custom made to my measurements. ivory duchess satin with swarofski crystals.
the lady promsied to have it to me the thursday before my wedding (i was getting married on the tuesday).
i paid her by paypal, then she emailed me, saying she lived 10mins away from me. what a conincidence!
so i had 3 fittings and the dress was made perfectly and beautifully and i picked it up the night before the wedding. it fitted like a glove and being a larger size, the dress was so comfy and flattering. i couldnt have been happier.
so i just goes to show, if you buy a dress a ebay, it might not work out, its a pretty important event and in my case i was lucky i found someone at the last minute who made it perfect.
xx

Yes i to bought my dress and my bridesmaids dress from ebay a lovely small shop in china took my measurements over the email and tailor made my dress to fit me perfectly. i couldnt wait to try it on when the post man arrived. it fitted like a glove and my day was perfect, the only thing is sometimes the photographs arent as clear as you would like them to be and when my dress arrived it was beautiful dont get me wrong but it didnt sparkle the way i had hoped. so then i took another trip to ebay and bought myself some swarovski crystals and i sat with my gem tac and my tweezers and personalised my own dress. its a one of creation that no one will have which made me feel like a million dollars it looks expensive and i only i knew that it cost me less than £100 . it sparkled like a vera wang creation in fact it was nicer!!
So yes i would definately buy another wedding dress from ebay and i would encourage anyone else on a budget to do the same. if anyone has doubts about sizes get them to make it a little bit bigger because that way you can always take it to a good seamstress to take it in for you.

I bought my wedding dress from e-bay along with a tiara from New York (£10) and the petticoat that went under the dress.
The actual dress cost £40 + postage. My view on it was that if it wasn't right it was so cheap I could buy something else. The dress was beautiful and very stunning. I had some alterations done by a friend + it was perfect. I'm not one to be fussed over + being in a wedding dress shop would have driven me mad! I cannot believe the money that people spend these days. We got married in Malta in August. Everyone flew out to be there with us + it was a wonderful day. We had a reception back in the UK + I think the whole thing cost under £6K. (wedding, honeymoon, reception) Honestly buy/look online you will be surprised + it's nice to see what different things are out there. Enjoy x

I brought my dress off e-bay for £12 and postage made it to £98 in total. I took a picture of the dress to a dress making shop and they told me it would cost £850 to have it made. As with the excitement i couldn't wait to try it on at home instead of loads of people looking at you in a shop while you try it on. Nobody at the wedding knew until they said it must of cost you a fortune and i told them how much it really cost they were amazed and i would certainly recomend people to buy there dress of ebay and it means you can spend the extra money on extra special things like the honeymoon.

My fiance saw the dress she liked in a bridal shop at a cost of £1100, she hunted for it on the internet and found pictures of it, These were mailed to a certain lady on ebay and the dress arrived, fitting like a dream for a total cost of £140..........
Why go to the bridal shops except for a fitting and to see what you like and get ripped off, in the current economic climate cutting the costs have to be done, our total cost for the wedding including all dresses and suits............. £3000.
Buy from ebay and have it made in China, there is nothing wrong with it.

I bought my wedding dress off EBAY and was thoroughly delighted with it. I bought a red "Maggie Sotterio" dress to buy new cost over £1000 but I got it for £200 and it fitted like a glove and had so much detail on it.
I got married on Hogmanay in a wee chapel and it looked so gorgeous and so different, what is the point of spending all that money for one day and to deal with snooty bridal shops who look their nose down at you!!
I think EBAY is a great source for weddings, I got my wedding cake boxes there also along with the stuff to make my invitations!!

Yes i did buy my wedding dress from e-bay. It cost £171 all together with postage and packing, I also bought my tiara from e-bay for £3. I don't like being fussed around in shops, and having all that attention from people makes me very nervous, and self consious. I am a tall lady (5' 10''), but still buying a wedding dress online didn't worry me. I took all my measurements, especially the lengths, and shopped from there.
No one had a clue my dress was such a bargain. It saved me thousands. Plus i had a 7 month old daughter as the time, and it wasn't right to drag her around loads of wedding shops with me, so while she slept, i browsed.

I bought my wedding dress on ebay, and got a real bargain. A wedding shop was going bust and a woman went in and bought my dress to sell on ebay to make a profit. Nothing wrong with that but she forgot to put a reserve and i got a silk, two piece for 32.99 inc postage!! I had alterations done which cost 50.00 and no-one had any idea. We think we saved at least 400.00. We had a civil ceremony, hired mini buses, photos at a local castle, did the food our self and a live band, reception for 80 at night and flowers for less than 5 thouand.BEST DAY EVER!!!!

Ebay is fantastic for buying evening wear and wedding dresses. Especially when you need something on short notice. I wish I had bothered with a wedding dress so I could buy one off eBay, I love all that stuff. however, just because you can find absolute gems on ebay that's no reason to look down on wedding shops. I worked in one til the lady decided to close the retail location and work out of a private wokshop. I don't think we look down on people, that's not how you make sales. I'm sure some do, but every type of occassion store I've been in everyone couldn't do enough to help.
I think people like Saz are a shameful sort. How dare you go in to a wedding store to waste people's time with a fitting, browsing and getting fit with the intent of buying it offline and getting someone to make a copy. Then being so harsh about occassion stores as if you're owed something. Like everyone who runs a shop is some fat cat looking to rip off the working man. You ought to be ashasmed, everyone understands that times are tough at the moment and costs must be cut, but surely you can do it in a way that isn't at someone elses expense. You're right, there is nothing wrong with it, aside from copying someone elses design is stealing. It's people like you that make me not pitty all the women who came in saying they bought dresses from China and they were nothing like they wanted. Absolutly disgusting behaviour.

hi i dragged my mum round lots of shops finding everything too expensive. i had a look on ebay and found the dress i wanted made in hong kong, i ended up seeing another i really liked and my dad said why not get them both and decide which your gonna wear. they cost me under £100 for both including p&p. i thought they would be horrible but when they turned up, but my god they are beautiful no fault no cheap nasty material just beautiful workmanship. i took them into my local dan kerr and another wedding shop and they both wanted to buy the dresses off me. and could not believe that i got them from hong kong and off ebay. so please dont be afraid of buying its the best thing i ever did. thanks to these countries for doing this hope many a bride on a low budget or even an expensive budget will try. if you dont like it you can always sell and end up making money.

Seriously, I’m not joking, I really did. I bought my wedding dress after looking at one single image, from eBay, without trying it on. WITHOUT TRYING IT ON. Ha, I can hear you all gasping from here, but hey how bad could it be? I figured that as long as it had some form of material to cover all of my private parts then I was on to a winner, so late one night after days of contemplating, i did it, i clicked the bid now button on eBay. Bid price $19.95 (a bid which i subsequently won) postage and handling $165.00. Total cost of wedding dress $200. Sanity 0, Insanity 1. Actual cost of dress in shops = over $2000. Sanity 1, Insanity 1. So, so far even stevens.
When it arrived I was so pleased. It was awesome. I have posted some images here :

My best friend bought her wedding dress from China via ebay. It was a great design and fitted well, but the material was very cheap and horrible - you couldn't tell this from the listing on ebay. When she tried it on the dress so obviously looked cheap, the material didn't sit right but sagged. As she'd had it tailored they wouldn't accept returns but she didn't want to wear it as it wasn't her dream dress so she went and bought from a sale in a wedding shop - £350 reduced from £895!
I'd say it's fine to buy on ebay but there's a reason it's so cheap - they're saving money somewhere and in this case it was very poor material.
