Which fruit and veg box is best?
Filed under: Savvy Shopper, Food and Drink
Some of you want to save money, but you still want to make sure you're eating right as well. Good for you! Well never one to shy away from a difficult task, WalletPop have been nosing about in fruit and veg boxes and organic delivery services to see exactly what you get for your money. You all need your five-a-day after all. I've given myself a budget of a tenner, and I'm going shopping for a box of mixed fruit and veg so I get all of my vitamins. Yummy!
Abel and Cole
Well, their small mixed box comes in at £10.95, and although that's slightly over our budget, it's pretty good. What do you get this week? Bananas (Fairtrade), carrots, cauliflower, courgettes, kiwi fruit, oranges, potatoes and white onions. I've actually used Abel and Cole before and they're pretty good. You get a lot of stuff and there's always a surprise in the box - sunflower seeds or something like that. Good delivery service too.
Riverford
Not too impressed with the quantity of this box. For £10.45, Riverford's mixed box this week offers: Swiss chard, leeks, mushrooms, vine tomatoes, braeburn/gala apples and green williams pears. That doesn't seem very much to me. You actually have to place a minimum order of £12.50 so you'll have to buy extras. But, if you're not in the local area, they'll locate your local farm and find out what you can source from there.
The Organic Delivery Company
Not a bad selection with this one. Here's what you get: Carrots, Broccoli, White cabbage, Onions, Tomatoes, Leeks, Raw beetroot, Bananas, Apples, Pears. But the price? £14.95. This is their cheapest mixed box option so it's not the best unless there's a lot of you chipping in for the stuff. In which case, might not last very long.
There's a lot of choice out there if you look for it, and some boxes and companies might suit you while others don't. If you live in a more rural area, have a chat with you local farm shop, they might run their own scheme. £10 a week isn't a lot to make sure you get your five a day and if you're investing in your fruit and veg, you're much less likely to let it go to waste. You'll also get lots of new things to try so you might even get better at cooking.

In defence of Riverford the minimum spend is only if you do not have a box of veg or a box of fruit. This coupled with the free delivery would have made it cheaper than the others? If you had had the equivalent priced box @£ 14.95 you may have felt a little more impressed?
