It's strawberry season! Shop bought Vs pick your own
Filed under: Savvy Shopper, Food and Drink
There's nothing that gets people more in the mood for summer than strawberries. In anything... On anything... Just on their own.
They're yummy and so much nicer than those imported ones you bought a few months back. But where do you get them? Just how much cheaper is pick your own?
Here are some of the best options for Wimbledon's favourite fruit.
Pick your own:
Not only is this option usually the cheapest, let's face it, it's the most fun! Especially if you ignore that sign that says "don't eat and pick" because you have to taste them to make sure they're yummy don't you? The general rule is one for you, three for the box. One for you, three for the box. Yummy! Picking your own is great if you've got kids. Nothing is better than teaching your kids all about different fruit (they might even learn to like gooseberries is they've picked them!), and if you fancy cooking a lot of fruit in bulk. But it's a lot of effort if you just feel like a bit of a tasty treat.
Organic delivery:
If you're getting strawberries from an organic delivery service, you know they're going to be the best on the market. And, you're helping a local farmer as well. But how much are they?
Abel and Cole: £2.99 for 220g.
The Organic Delivery Company: A bit pricey at £3.98 for 227g BUT if you buy a box of fruit and veg box, you'll get your strawberries free! brilliant.
And the supermarket:
I defy you to walk through the fruit and veg section without picking up a punnet of strawberries. They smell wonderful, and that smell has a habit of catching you when you're really really hungry. But if you're going to be spontaneous when you buy, where should you be shopping?
Tesco: Reduced from £2.99 to £2.49 for 300g
Sainsbury's: £2.99 for 300g OR any two for £4. Bargain!
Waitrose: Half price at £1.72 for 300g
Asda: £1.98 for 454g
Some great deals on the tasty treats at the moment. Brilliant. All that's left for you to decide is what to do with them. I prefer them with cream and sugar.
