New idea to save local shops... Brixton to get its own currency
Filed under: Economiser, Financial Crisis, Savvy Shopper
The Brixton Pound. It's not a new bar that's opening up in South London. It's the new 'local currency' that's being set up in the London borough to help support the local community and local businesses.
So how does it work?
What is it?
It's the new scheme that'll help you support people and businesses in the Brixton area. It's launching in September and it's meant to work alongside normal money - so you don't have to get your currency exchanged when you get to Brixton.
Why use it?
Well, instead of your money just turning into huge computer numbers at a big chain store headquarters, it will stay in Brixton and circulate - keeping spending alive in the area.
It'shelping local businesses without you having to do anything yourself. You just make a conscious effort to shop locally, buying local produce. I can't think of anything better.
As for what's in it for you? Well the local community are likely to use this scheme to reward people who use the 'currency'. So you'll get benefits for being loyal to the people signed up to the scheme.
What will it look like?
Well that's up to you. You can vote on the site and have your say about which famous Brixtonian ends up on the notes.
Got any more questions, well get yourself over to the website. The scheme sounds great and I'm keen to see how well it'll work when it launches in September.
