Me vs the Recession: The marvellous meal deal

Filed under: Economiser, Food and Drink, Me vs the Recession

Each week I document my fight back against the recession in this post. If you've got tips for coping with the financial crisis, or credit crunch stories you want to share feel free to tell me about them in the comments.

This week I'd planned to meet up with one of my school friends who I haven't seen for ages. Trouble is we're both trying not to spend too much at the moment (I'm trying to save up a bit so I can have a last minute holiday). And so came the usual dilemma - if we meet in a bar we'll inevitably end up spending much more than we intended and if we go out for dinner, we'll use a voucher but then end up going for more drinks afterwards. So what are the alternatives?

Well, my old faithful is the M&S meal deal - dine in for two for £10. Sadly they only run it every so often and you have to be quick or only the rubbish stuff is left. To my delight though I discovered a new one, at Morrisons. Apparently they've run meal deals like this in the past, but they've passed me by altogether. To be honest I just hadn't thought to look before.

The current deal which runs until the 19th July is really, really good value. You get a pizza from a selection of their 'The Best' range ones, a salad or garlic bread, tiramasu or profiteroles and a bottle of white wine all for £8. My friend and I decided this was by far the cheapest option so that's what we went for. And it was really lovely. There's plenty of food for two and the pizza was yummy!

So there you go. If you want a treat but you're seriously cash-strapped I'd definately recommend it. At just £4 each you couldn't cook anything yourself for much less. Just like M&S, Morrisons say they'll have these every so often, but won't have much advance warning, so I'll definately be keeping an eye out.
