Will tomorrow's Freeview box retuning day cost you?
Millions of TV viewers could find their Freeview boxes won't work unless they are retuned on or after Wednesday this week, and thousands more will be left without their favourite channels if their freeview box isn't up to the task.
The retuning is the result of changes to the frequencies used to broadcast TV channels and radio stations. It's part of a plan to make Five available to a greater part of the country and clear the way for high-definition digital TV channels.
So will it leave you out of pocket?
The changes to the transmissions will mean that 22,000 older digital TV set-top boxes, including the Daewoo DS608P, Labgear DTT100, and Triax DVB 2000T, will no longer work.
So in order to ensure a load of strangers can get to watch Neighbours, you will have to fork out for a new box, which is charming. New boxes start at around £7, which isn't going to break the bank, but it's incredibly frustrating.
In addition, around 460,000 households which get their TV channels from a relay transmitter will no longer be able to watch ITV3 and ITV4.
So what do you do?
Generally you can follow the steps below (from the Freeview website) to retune your box but in some cases you might need to refer to your box's instructions.
• Switch on your Freeview TV or box
• Using your remote control, press "menu"
• Select the "set up" or "installation" option (sometimes called "factory reset", "full retune" or "default settings")
• Press "OK". If your equipment asks if you want to delete all your channels, don't worry, this is normal.
• If you are prompted for a code, try 0000 or 1234
• Channels will be automatically installed. This may take a few minutes and your equipment may shut down and restart
• After retuning, you may have to reset your "favourites" list and when retuning your Freeview+ digital TV recorder, you may need to reset your future recordings
• Remember to retune every piece of Freeview equipment you have
• Retune your equipment from time to time to ensure you have the latest channels and services available to you
Of course, if you get your TV and radio channels from Sky or Virgin Media, you can just sit back and relax. You'll already be paying a hefty price for the TV everyone else gets for free, so it would be rude to ask you to pay more.

one day we will have the technology to watch tv without contiually retuning the box what happens if you are recording a series and you are on holiday. Does anyone think the word : Arrogance should apply to the digital service and I think service is'nt the word to descibe it

Does this mean that the sound will stay on now all through the program.?? Unlike it does now just when they are about to say something important the sound goes off or all that pixilating we get or when the channel vanishes for a few weeks.
Bring back the old TV

Of course thie "service" is arrogant it's the BBC & the government!!
This way they know what we watch & when & even have the cheek to charge us for the priviledge
I unfortunately pay sky for a basic package but only so I can watch alternative sports on Eurosport instead of the boring rubbish BBC insists on us watching
We mustn't forget that this is not the 1st time many people have had to pay again for free boxes & I for 1 don't think it will be the last
How many more times in a year can the government & the BBC charge us for watching tv?

Oooh! BBC bashing - very fashionable at the moment! True, the technology is there thanks to the research and development made by the BBC , which we have paid for through the licence fee. How many of you upgrade your pc equipment in order to use the latest software - and it costs you hundreds of pounds not tens - because you think you need it and without complaint? Yet you find it unreasonable that broadcasting equipment should need upgrading and that the BBC should be at fault. What about the Digibox manufacturers? What is their part in it, apart from making profit in selling these none upgradeable items to us? Companies like Sky are envious of the licence fee only because it prevents them from making more money out of us.
The government had a need to provide more channels and digital was the only way to do it, so here we are. Or should we just be ludites and go back to just black and white TV and midnight broadcasting closure?

have you tried fitting an analogue satellite - it gives you Eurosport for free plus several German channels showing sport and also CNN - all at no cost and much more reliable than the digital channels. Can't believe that we are now going to lose ITV 3 and 4 just as we had got used to watching more than BBC 1 and 2, and ITV 1 and Channel 4. Is this progress? Its a postcode lottery whether you get the signal from a main transmitter or from a relay transmitter and this then decides what stations you can or cannot watch - unless of course you want to pay a fortune to Sky or Virgin (which isn't available in this area anyway).

What is the big fuss all about..l regularly retune my freeview box to update new channels and 'debug' it. Freeview is a great thing, and l don't mind speding 5 minutes doing a reset.
Freeview boxes can be bought for less than £7 on Ebay and other shops...not because they are broken , but because people have bought new TV's with intergrated Freeview.
Stop maning people.!

Well there's a relief I only lose the ITV channels which I can't get anyway
I can get BBC1 BBC2 (BBC3/CBBC) and News 24
oh and a couple of Radio Channels so once the digital signal is switched off that's it for ITV and channel 4 ps we never got channel 5...ever!!!
And all the Guff from the Government about Digital bringing more choice
they should come out here and then justify the ever increasing licence fee
I had more choice as a kid in the 1960's

Where do you live? as if your in a bad area then that is why you have a problem picking up these channels, but if your not then either the box needs updating or you have some connections wrong, I did have a similar problem a few years ago so bought a booster but still had a lot of interferance during bad weather, the last time I retuned I lost quite a few channels which was frustrating as they just happend to be the ones I watched the most, not to be beaten I did some investigating and found that once I removed the booster again it was fine, that didn't make sense at the time, so it may be needed yet again after tomorrow. So do some checks and searches like I did it could just be something as simple.

I would also be interested in a £7 set top box. Can you either show us where it exists or rectify the report; which I think comes directly from a freeview press release and is supposed to make us tthink this isn't an outrageous deliberate act of built in obslescence.
Can anyone explain why some channels will no longer be available, and why?

Of course a lot of the old digi boxes were made redundant on the last couple of re-tunes. So most people have discovered this already.
I work in retail selling these boxes & have had to spend so much time re-tuning customers boxes it's ridiculous.
It worries me that if people can't learn how to re-tune a digi box how on earth are they supposed to work out who has the best policies in a government election??
Probably expaines why we have what we have! & the government realises we really are that gullible!
Sad but true!
Also £7 for a digi box!! Tell me where from & i will be buying hundreds because i would be saving my customers alot of money.
