Top 10 products that save you money and save the planet

Filed under: Economiser, House and Home

I'll admit it. I'm one of those annoying people who's super-keen when it comes to saving the planet. My house is full of energy saving lightbulbs, my recycling bag always has more in it than the rubbish bag, I always use public transport or walk....

I'm sure plenty of you are advocates of energy saving too, but lets face it the most important thing to all of us right now is saving money. The two go hand-in-hand most of the time though, so with a bit of help from Nigel's Eco Store, here are the top 10 products for saving the planet and saving you money.

1. ECO Showerdrop Meter £11.99

This clever little gadget will tell you exactly how much water you're using when you have a shower, and remind you when you've used the recommended amount.

Saving for your wallet: £180 a year (based on a family of four)

Saving for the planet: 40,000 litres of water and 600Kg of CO2 a year

2. Single Spray Water Saving Showerhead £14.99

I've got one of these and they really do work! It's DEFRA approved and works by mixing air and water so you actually use less when you shower, but it's still powerful. They are also universal so will fit any shower.

Saving for your wallet: £160 a year

Saving for the planet: 60% less water used

3. Heatkeeper Radiator Panels £36.97

These also really do work (though I have to say I cheat and just use a big sheet of tin foil!) and are particularly good if you have a larger room with a small radiator in - you'll really notice the difference. You just slide them down the back of your radiators and they reflect more of the heat back into the room.

Saving for your wallet: £100 a year

Saving for the planet: 20% less energy used

4. Energy Saving Lightbulbs

OK, so these don't really need any explanation, but it's worth knowing that lighting accounts for 25% of national power generation, so by using them you really are making a big difference.

Saving for your wallet: £40 per bulb over its lifetime

Saving for the planet: 450 to 900Kg of CO2 per bulb in its lifetime

5. Radiator Booster £19.99

This is frankly genius! It uses a small fan to capture the heat from the back of your radiator and circulate round the room. Not only does this mean you use less energy, it also means your house will get warm faster. The booster is adjustable in size and has it's own thermostat.

Saving for your wallet: £70-£140 a year

Saving for the planet: Up to 50% less energy used

6. EcoBalls £29.99

This laundry kit lasts for up to 1,000 washes and you use it instead of washing powder. This is another one I use and it really does work. There are three balls which you put in the drum with your clothes, they contain mineral salts which combined with the movement of the balls lift dirt from your clothes. You can use a shorter cycle and a lower temperature.

Saving for your wallet: £74 a year

Saving for the planet: Less water and energy used

7. Ecobutton £14.99

Simple but brilliant, this button plugs into your computer via USB and whenever you leave your desk, simply press it and it'll put your computer into the most economical sleep mode available.

Saving for your wallet: £50 a year

Saving for the planet: 130Kg CO2 a year

8. Energenie Standby Shutdown £13.49

This clever little gadget recognises when you put an appliance on standby and automatically turns off the mains power to it. Perfect for TVs, freeview boxes, stereos etc.

Saving for your wallet: £34 a year

Saving for the planet: less energy used

9. Hippo the Water Saver £1.99

A nifty little thing you put inside your toilet cistern and it saves water every time you flush.

Saving for your wallet: £20 a year

Saving for the planet: 3 litres of water every you time flush!

10. The Eco Kettle £29.99

This has two chambers inside it so you can measure out exactly how much water you want to boil.

Saving for your wallet: only a tiny bit, but you'll save time too!
