It's lovely up North: Northern regions see most house price growth over past decade

London house prices grew faster than property values in any other region of the UK over the last five years, and in 2009.

But over the past ten years, it was the Northern regions, led by Yorkshire, that grew the most, with London and the South East vying for bottom position, according to the consultancy Acadametrics, which focuses on the housing market.

Last year, property prices in London jumped 7%, ahead of the South East with price rises averaging 5.7% and Yorkshire and Humberside with 4.1% growth. The West Midlands recorded the smallest rise, of 1.5%. Over the last five years, the capital also led the pack with a 26.5% surge in house prices, followed by Yorkshire with 13.5% growth.

However, over the past decade the tables were turned. Yorkshire saw the most growth in property values, of 146.6%, closely followed by the North West (143.1%), the North (144.1%) and Wales (142.6%). The South East and London were at the bottom of the table with 107.3% and 115.4% growth respectively.

The findings are based on transacted prices recorded at the Land Registry, smoothed, seasonally and mix adjusted.
