Ask Walletpop: Extended warranties, the unwanted friend
Filed under: Ask WalletPop
Dear Walletpop,
I took out a washing machine repair protection plan with a big extended warranty company back in January 2007 which I understood should have ended in February 2008.
However, while my husband and I were going through our statement together this weekend we realised that neither of us knew what one particular direct debit was. But after contacting our bank it dawned on me that it must be for the washing machine plan I had taken out with them two years ago.
When I called the protection plan provider to ask why the direct debits had continued beyond the original term, I was told the repair plan would be renewed automatically unless the company were informed otherwise.
After sending my complaint in writing, they have now agreed to reimburse us with £25 for the £150.50 they have taken out of our account! They said they've fulfilled their legal duties by sending out a renewal letter informing us. Can this be true?
Thanks
Sibel
Ask WalletPop: How do I get my life back after bankruptcy?
Filed under: Credit Cards, Financial Crisis, Mortgages, Ask WalletPop, Loans
Dear Walletpop,i am an ex-bankrupt discharged three years ago, but I still cannot credit and I'm getting frustrated. I have my own business – since 2006, but cannot get help to expand and am getting angry about it. Any comments?
Thanks
Barry
The debtors' prisons of Dickensian times may long ago have shut their iron gates forever but even in modern times, the life of a person who is or has been declared bankrupt can be a living hell.
Although a declared bankrupt can be discharged after a year – meaning you are cleared of any further financial obligations under the order – the fact of their bankruptcy stays on your credit record for SIX years.
Even after that time, you may still have to declare that you were once bankrupt, particularly when applying for a mortgage.
But it is trying to achieve a workable credit score in that period after bankruptcy that poses one of the cruelest ironies of all – no one will give you credit without a credit score, but you can't build a credit score without credit.
So what are the options in the short to mid-term if you are after a loan, mortgage or just a credit card?

I've got a wedding coming up, but after Christmas I can't afford to buy a new outfit. I'm thinking of getting a store-card so I can buy something fantastic to wear. Which store cards are best?
Thanks!
Becky, London
Store cards are a tricky business. The shops lure you in with savings on your first purchase. And despite you thinking you'll just buy one thing and then pay it off, you probably won't. Then you're locked into paying as much as 30% APR. Let's have a look at some rates.
