It doesn't sound a bad price, especially given the swanky location, until you discover that this flat is only marginally larger than a dining room table.

It is said to be a former cupboard, converted in the property boom of the 1980s, but with internal measurements of 11 ft by 5.5 ft, there's no 'former' about it. This is a cupboard with pretensions (although, just to be clear.. it's not the one on the left).

So why would anyone pay £200,000 for a cupboard?
Continue reading Who would pay £200,000 for a flat the size of a dining room table?

Filed under: Property, Weird and Wonderful

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Housing affordability hits seven-year high, with Bradford most affordable area

It's not all doom and gloom in the housing market. Experts are forecasting a period of falling prices later in the year, but this is good news for first-time buyers.

In fact, properties are now more affordable than at any time in the last seven years, property website Zoopla found. The average earner can now afford to buy 58% of UK properties - compared with just 34% three years ago when house prices and mortgage rates peaked.

Bradford is the most affordable place in Britain - and London, not surprisingly, the least affordable. Where else is a good place to buy?
Continue reading Housing affordability hits seven-year high, with Bradford most affordable area

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Kraft admits it reneged on Somerdale promise after 'Googling' Polish factory

This doesn't bode well for the nation's favourite chocolate brand.

Cadbury's new American owner has admitted that it reneged on its promise to keep the Somerdale factory open, simply because it couldn't be bothered to check out a rival Polish factory.

A Kraft executive has come under fire from British MPs today and the heated exchange has thrown up some hilarious comments... although this is obviously no laughing matter for the workers of Somerdale who are now out of a job.

The Unite union called for a 'Cadbury law' on foreign takeovers.
Continue reading Kraft admits it reneged on Somerdale promise after 'Googling' Polish factory

Filed under: Food and Drink, Weird and Wonderful

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Calvin and Tommy, together at last in super-brand love

Calvin Klein, I'm afraid, lost any claim to coolness when Cherie Blair helpfully revealed that husband and then-PM Tony wore his signature underwear.

Not since John Major was rumoured to have tucked his shirt into his y-fronts had politics and pants been so nauseatingly combined. No matter which way you looked at it, the hip New York-based fashion king was finally outed as the provider of everyday underwear rather than the purveyor of cool chic that slid effortlessly from catwalk to the perfectly-formed bodies of rich, good-looking twentysomethings.

Tony Blair in his CK pants? Puh-leez!

But although this blip on the upward coolness curve at CK may have devalued the brand for me, it's the Chinese knock-offs that flood into Europe that does the damage for the rest of the fashion-hungry public.

Cheaply-made, poorly-stitched, guaranteed-to-shrink tat being sold as genuine Calvin Klein can be found in street stalls from Istanbul to the Algarve.

Though you can take your choice of any designer label - Burberry, Gucci, Dior, Hermes - one other brand that has been ripped off mercilessly is the former streetwear kingpin Tommy Hilfiger.
Continue reading Calvin and Tommy, together at last in super-brand love

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rents set to rise as housing market picks up

The housing market is heating up with new estate agent figures showing an increasing number of properties being put up for sale and more homes changing hands.

As more For Sale signs go up, however, the number of properties available to rent is falling, which is likely to push rents higher.

A third of chartered surveyors expect rents to rise over the next three months, according to the latest Lettings Survey from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

Rents across the UK have been falling for many months now. In fact, statistics show that rents have been on a downward trend since Autumn 2008.

However, the supply of new properties coming on to the rental market has fallen for the second consecutive quarter, meaning that demand for rental properties is now outstripping supply.

More than a fifth of the chartered surveyors who responded to the survey saw a fall in the number of instructions coming from new landlords between November 2009 and January 2010.

One of the main reasons for this is that so-called accidental landlords, who had to rent out properties, rather than sell them due to the weakness of the housing market over the past couple of years, are now attempting to take advantage of the current upturn to sell their houses and flats on.
Continue reading Rents set to rise as housing market picks up

Filed under: Property, House and Home

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Don't let the recession kill your pets

The recession has meant all of us have had to cut back. We just can't afford all the luxuries that we used to take for granted.

For some, pet insurance is falling into that category. However, it has emerged that one result of this is that their owners are facing unaffordable vets bills. A new alarming (and possibly alarmist) study from Sainsbury's finance, found that 56% of vets have had to put down animals who could have been treated simply because their owners couldn't afford the cost of their treatment.

Continue reading Don't let the recession kill your pets

Permalink | Email this | Comments

David Beckham's injury - why losing a star can be good for the team

David Beckham's chances of making it to his fourth World Cup finals in South Africa this summer have been squashed after he tore his Achilles tendon during AC Milan's victory over Chievo this weekend.

He flew to Finland for an operation by a specialist which has been successful, but the surgeon said there was no chance he would recover in time for the World Cup. While the injury is obviously a personal tragedy for the midfielder, it is by no means a disaster for the team. Some say it could be a blessing in disguise for England and open the door for younger talent.

It speaks volumes about how any team of colleagues doesn't have to suffer when they lose a star.
Continue reading David Beckham's injury - why losing a star can be good for the team

Filed under: Entertainment, Work & Careers

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Baby money worries make divorce more likely: solve your money headaches

Anyone who has ever had a baby knows how spectacularly stressful those first few months are. As they get older you face new types of stress, from the toddler asking 'why?' for the thousandth time, to the teenager declaring you ruined his life by washing his jeans. But those first months of stress are special, because they come with the awesome power of sleep deprivation, confusion and fear.

Now take that stress, and multiply it by two, three or even four. It's hardly surprising that a new survey has found that parents of twins or triplets are more likely to divorce than those having children one at a time.

In fact, almost a third will end up getting divorced.

No-one is going to be able avoid the incredible stress of having two or three mini people who are unable to sleep in bursts any longer than two hours. However, the survey found that the cost of multiple births is a major source of anxiety for parents.

Almost two-thirds of parents with twins or triplets were worse off after their babies were born compared with 40% of other families

But there are a few things you can do to cut the cost of any baby.
Continue reading Baby money worries make divorce more likely: solve your money headaches

Filed under: Families, Budgeting & Planning

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Record petrol prices strike another blow against Easter travel

We all know that travel over Easter is going to be a nightmare. It's practically a tradition to set off in excitement on Thursday evening, arrive shattered in the small hours of Friday morning, and spend the first two days of the four day break getting over the journey. Then of course, you have to psyche yourself up do it all over again in the other direction.

This year we have the threat of air and rail strikes to add into the mix, and now comes the news that petrol prices are likely to hit a record high just as we're set to fill the tank with petrol.

So just how bad has it become, and what can we do about it?
Continue reading Record petrol prices strike another blow against Easter travel

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lip gloss, liquid soap and Blu-ray disc players join inflation shopping basket

Hairdryers, bars of soap, lipstick and pitta bread are out - but hair straighteners, liquid soap, lip gloss, garlic bread and Blu-ray disc players are in.

The latest shakeup of the shopping basket used to measure inflation in Britain gives some fascinating insights into our shopping habits.

The Office for National Statistics updates the basket once a year to make sure it tracks the right items to work out the cost of living. Statisticians have found that people are spending a lot more on garlic bread than pitta bread these days, and lip gloss has ousted lipstick in the basket "reflecting a trend towards gloss".
Continue reading Lip gloss, liquid soap and Blu-ray disc players join inflation shopping basket

Filed under: Entertainment, Food and Drink

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Pink Floyd wins court battle in a further blow to EMI - can it stay independent?

Pink Floyd's court victory over EMI last week over online sales of individual songs was celebrated as a victory for artistic integrity.

But it was a further blow to the debt-laden British record company. EMI's fate will be decided in the next few months and it may well end up falling into foreign hands.

It's a sad tale given EMI's illustrious history. The smallest of the world's four major record companies, it signed all the big names in British rock history - from the Beatles to David Bowie, Queen, the Sex Pistols and Pink Floyd.
Continue reading Pink Floyd wins court battle in a further blow to EMI - can it stay independent?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The world's most beautiful banknotes

Where are the world's most beautiful banknotes to be found? Surely our dowdy pound notes or the equally boring US dollar bills won't make the top ten, let alone the top twenty. Even the euro notes, a brand new currency, hardly set the world on fire, despite coming with many different designs that vary from country to country.

No, to find more colourful banknotes you have to look further afield, to African and Asian countries and obscure island states. Here is Walletpop's selection of the best.

And some of them go for far more than their face value on Ebay. Armenia issued its first-ever 100,000 Dram (£170) note last year, the largest denomination in the Eurasian country (pictured). It depicts King Abgar V of Edessa and is being sold on Ebay for $365.99 (£239).
Continue reading The world's most beautiful banknotes

Filed under: Entertainment, Weird and Wonderful

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Men are more careless with cash than women. The parrot in question belonged to Angela Iannelli of Pennsylvania, and was confiscated when Bank of America contractors entered her home, erroneously believing that she was defaulting on her mortgage and that the property was vacant.

Iannelli is sueing the Bank of America over emotional distress - it took more than a week to secure the release of Luke, her blue Macaw and she needed medication for her anxiety.

As far-fetched as this all sounds, it got me thinking what if, and this really is the stuff of nightmares, the bailiffs were at your house - would you know your rights?

Continue reading Bank of America in lawsuit over wrongly seized parrot

Filed under: House and Home, Weird and Wonderful

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Time for a day of making yourself heard! I could barely restrain my fury today when I was told I'd have to wait five minutes for my morning coffee.

Honestly, as if anyone is so busy they can't wait five minutes for anything.

Normally I would have apologised for asking for it, and for making her rush to brew it, and offered to have a glass of water instead.Today I wanted to write a strongly-worded letter to someone.

And where has this strange consumer rage come from? It's the knowledge that today is World Consumer Rights Day - the day when we should all get what we're entitled to.

However, as my early morning coffee rage demonstrates, there's a fine line between demanding your rights, and being bad-tempered and unreasonable. So in an effort to avoid some sort of worldwide outbreaks of fisticuffs in shops and cafes, we've put together a quick guide to your rights, and how to assert them.
Continue reading Time for a day of making yourself heard! Our debt problems aren't just terrible, they are unimaginably awful. A debt charity has announced that for one in three of the people who contact them, there's no traditional solution available. There's no clear way out.

This is already bearing in mind that some of the solutions they are talking about are awful, and include everything from signing up to a strict budget for the next five or ten years, to losing your home in bankruptcy.

What they are saying today is that for one in three people, even if they did all of this, they still wouldn't be able to cope with their debts.

However, the charity, the brilliant CCCS, does point out that there may still be a way out.
Continue reading Horror statistics from debt charity - but there is a way out

Filed under: Credit Cards, Financial Crisis, Loans, Budgeting & Planning

Permalink | Email this | Comments

New rights for credit card holders from today

I love the run-up to an election.
Post Office Travel Money research shows that 77% of us plan to go away as much as we did last year, but eight out of ten say they'll adapt their travel plans to a tighter budget. So how do you take the same amount of holiday but spend less?

Continue reading Thrifty travel is on the cards for 2010

Filed under: Travel, Budgeting & Planning

Permalink | Email this | Comments
