After the global economy suffered another bad year and recovery looks to be slow and protracted, we look back at some of the lighter moments of 2009.

Pundits were divided over what shape the global slump would take: a W i.e. double-dip downturn, or a saxophone-shaped recovery, anyone?

Boom in fraud as figures soar to 21-year high

We Brits are truly an industrious race. Give us lemons, as the saying goes, and we'll make lemonade.

So it is with mixed feelings, I guess, that we learn one sector of the economy is booming in this time of recession. In fact it is at a 21-year high. It's just a pity that the sector is fraud.

In the just the first six months of this year, the number of cases of fraud reaching court was the highest since way back in 1988, with 163 chancers, scammers and ne'er-do-wells facing charges of serious fraud where more than £100,000 was embezzled. The total combined value of the alleged crimes is £636 million.
