Those hoping to snap up a cheap last-minute break this summer need to watch out for potential holiday scams.

As one of the busiest booking periods for last-minute summer getaways begins, experts at GetSafeOnline.org and travel association ABTA warn that bargain hunters are ignoring basic online fraud-prevention measures in their rush for the ultimate holiday bargain, increasing the risk of being caught out by bogus breaks.

Britons over the age of 65 find it difficult to track down reasonably priced car and travel insurance, with many insurers refusing to provide quotes at all, according to new research from Which? Money magazine.

It found that consumers in this age bracket usually have to pay much more for cover, while those over 75 or 85 years old can often only get insurance from specialists in this market, such as Saga.

Almost two thirds of Britons are confused by foreign currency, while an incredible 30% believe that the main currency in France - which switched to the Euro years ago now - is still the Franc, new figures from online travel agent Sunshine reveal.

But this lack of knowledge is costing us dear, with more than half of the population spending more than they mean to on holiday because they do not understand the local currency and therefore shell out more than they would in the UK for the same goods and services.

So much for going on a relaxing break: not only does the latest volcanic ash-induced travel chaos make it difficult or even impossible to get away, but new research reveals that a fifth of travellers fall victim to pickpockets and other thieves while on holiday abroad.

Four in ten victims of holiday theft have had cash nicked, while a fifth had their cameras stolen and 16% have been relieved of their credit or debit cards, according to insurer Direct Line.
