How to find cheap city breaks

Beat the winter blues and escape on a quick city break. If you can put up with the cold and wet weather, there are some good deals to be had in the UK. Otherwise look further afield for some much needed vitamin D.

Here is a round-up of city breaks and weekend getaways that won't break the bank.

Get savvy and book your holidays online

However much you fancy an exotic break after all this cold weather, ice and snow, you will probably want to do it cheaply. In particular, because your income is likely to get squeezed if taxes and interest rates go up later in the year as expected.

In fact one in four people are looking to spend up to 50% less on their holidays this year. That doesn't necessarily mean another staycation. It looks like people are simply becoming more savvy: nearly half are going to shop around for the best holiday deals online this summer.

So how do you get the best deal?

Horray! Lastminute.com ishaving another sale. I get so excited about itspop-up sales. It's always really good stuff and a really good deal. I've managed to snap up hotel rooms for £10 and great theatre ticket deals. So what's up for grabs today?

  • Theatre at 50% off.
  • Eat at Marco Pierre White's restaurant for £10.
  • Hotels from £10.
  • City breaks to Prague from £109.

The best bit about this sale? It's happening every Thursday for 24 hours. So if you're not lucky enough to snap up some goodies (you'll have to be quick!) or if there's nothing that takes your fancy, you can just pop back next week and try again.

So go and get a cup of tea and get ready. It all kicks off in ten minutes so you've got to be quick!

Hotel discount sites can save you a fortune

Filed under: Travel, Technology and Online

Rooms at a Venice Hotel were mistakenly given away for €0.01 a night last year after human error meant the massively discounted rate appeared on travel websites. Bosses at the Crown Plaza Venice East Quarto D'Altino were forced to honour the bookings at the hotel where rooms normally cost between £90 and £150 a night.

But while such bargains are few and far between it's always possible to save money on hotel bookings by using hotel discount sites, resellers or your bank's travel service.

Lastminute.com £5 theatre deals - tonight at 8.30pm

Lastminute.com have done it again. Their 'When It's Gone It's Gone' sales are fantastic. Last time they did one of these, I managed to bag myself a swanky hotel room in Central London for a tenner so they're worth keeping an eye on.

This time, it's theatre tickets, and if you're quick (and you really do have to be quick) then you can snap up a ticket for a fiver. The sale starts at 8:30 this evening and I'm pretty certain that by 8:40 they'll be gone. Things really do move that quickly.

So here are my tips for bagging a deal.

WalletTip: Free email newletters you really want in your inbox

Most email newsletters that you sign up for are often rubbish. They go into your spam folder and you're probably glad to see the back of them. Even if you did sign up for them, after a while, they're just not that much fun, are they? But, there are some out there that are brilliant and fun! Best of all they could save you money.

So, which ones are worth tapping those keys for?

Get free stuff at the lastminute.com pop-up shop

Lastminute.com are going freebie crazy at the moment and they've opened a pop-up shop in the middle of Covent Garden. You can grab yourself bargains until 7pm tonight, although I'm guessing there will be a pretty long queue so it's best to get there after work if you want to join in the fun. They've even roped Noah and the Whale into playing a mini gig to keep the crowds happy while they wait for their stuff. Don't worry if you're not in London, it's not just the capital that benefits from the freebies.

I'm writing this in a swanky hotel wrapped up in a fluffy bath robe. Drinking a cup of tea and pondering what goodies to order from room service. I'm a world away from home and it's fabulous. Except, I'm not miles away from home. I'm a few train stops away. I'm staying in a swanky hotel for next to nothing, all because of lastminute.com's Top Secret Hotel deals.
