Mortgage fraud surges as confidence returns to housing market

Mortgage fraud surged again last year, in particular identity fraud, reversing a steady decline in fraud cases in previous years.

Total frauds increased by nearly 10% in 2009 from 2008, according to CIFAS, the UK's fraud prevention service.

The housing slump deterred fraudsters during the recession - but now they are back as the market has started to recover.

Well, this is legal route that most of us would go down - yet fake payslip websites that make it worryingly easy for borrowers to commit mortgage fraud are all over the internet.

Boom in fraud as figures soar to 21-year high

We Brits are truly an industrious race. Give us lemons, as the saying goes, and we'll make lemonade.

So it is with mixed feelings, I guess, that we learn one sector of the economy is booming in this time of recession. In fact it is at a 21-year high. It's just a pity that the sector is fraud.

In the just the first six months of this year, the number of cases of fraud reaching court was the highest since way back in 1988, with 163 chancers, scammers and ne'er-do-wells facing charges of serious fraud where more than £100,000 was embezzled. The total combined value of the alleged crimes is £636 million.
